The Complete Homeowner's Guide to the Energize Shoreline Heat Pump Program

Everything Shoreline homeowners need to know before replacing their heating system.

Thinking About a Heat Pump?

If you've been researching heating and cooling systems, you've probably heard about the Energize Shoreline program.

You may also have found yourself asking questions like:

  • Do I qualify?
  • How much money could I save?
  • What's the difference between the Standard and Moderate Income programs?
  • Do I have to attend a class?
  • Can I choose any contractor?
  • Can I install any heat pump?
  • What happens first?
  • Is the money guaranteed?
  • How long does the process take?

Those are excellent questions.

This guide answers each one in plain English so you can understand how the program works before making any decisions.

At Evergreen Home Heating and Energy, we believe informed homeowners make the best decisions.

What Is Energize Shoreline?

The Energize Shoreline program is a City of Shoreline initiative designed to encourage homeowners to replace older heating systems with high-efficiency electric heat pumps.

The goals are simple:

• Lower energy use

• Reduce carbon emissions

• Improve indoor comfort

• Lower monthly utility costs

To encourage homeowners to make the switch, the City offers financial incentives to qualifying households.

The amount depends on your household's eligibility and the program category you qualify for.

Who Can Participate?

Not every home qualifies.

Generally speaking, the program is designed for homeowners who:

✔ Own a home within Shoreline city limits

✔ Use an older heating system such as:

  • Natural gas
  • Oil
  • Electric furnace
  • Electric baseboard heat

✔ Replace that system with a qualifying heat pump

✔ Work with an approved contractor

✔ Complete the required program steps

Some homes may not qualify depending on their existing heating system or previous equipment.

If you're unsure, that's exactly what Evergreen can help determine during your consultation.

What's the Difference Between Standard and Moderate Income?

This is probably the question we hear most often.

Fortunately, it's pretty straightforward.

Standard Program

The Standard Program is available to homeowners who meet the program's basic requirements.

If you qualify, you may receive:

$2,500 toward your new heat pump installation.

No income verification is required for this program.

You simply need to meet the program's eligibility requirements.

Moderate-Income Program

The Moderate Income Program provides additional assistance for households whose annual income falls within a specific range established by King County.

If you qualify,

your incentive increases to

$6,000.

The City—not Evergreen—determines income eligibility.

We'll gladly explain the process, but we don't review or approve income documentation.

Low-Income Program

The City also offers a separate program for qualifying lower-income households.

Depending on eligibility and available funding,

the program may cover the entire installation cost.

Because funding is limited,

applications are reviewed individually by the City.

What Does "Qualifying Heat Pump" Mean?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

Not every heat pump qualifies for the program.

To receive the incentive,

the equipment must appear on the City's approved equipment list.

That list includes systems that meet strict efficiency and performance standards.

Fortunately, Evergreen already works with qualifying equipment and can recommend systems that meet both program requirements and your home's comfort needs.

Why Can't I Just Buy Any Heat Pump?

Imagine buying a vehicle expecting a federal tax credit,

only to discover afterward it wasn't on the approved list.

Heat pumps work the same way.

The incentive follows the approved equipment—not simply the fact that it's a heat pump.

That's why choosing an experienced participating contractor is so important.

Why Do I Have to Attend a Workshop?

Many homeowners wonder why the City requires a workshop.

The answer is education.

The workshop helps homeowners understand:

  • how heat pumps work
  • expected energy savings
  • installation requirements
  • financing options
  • available incentives

Most homeowners tell us the workshop answers questions they didn't even know they had.

Why Does Evergreen Recommend Scheduling Before the Workshop?

Here's something many homeowners don't realize.

You don't have to wait until every step is completed before speaking with us.

Scheduling your consultation early gives you time to:

✔ Understand your home's needs

✔ Compare equipment options

✔ Learn what your installation may involve

✔ Receive budget pricing

✔ Prepare questions for the workshop

By the time you've completed the City's requirements,

you'll already know exactly which system makes the most sense for your home.

Is the Money Guaranteed?

No.

The incentives depend on:

  • available funding
  • program rules
  • homeowner eligibility
  • qualifying equipment
  • completing all required program steps

Funding can change as the program evolves.

That's why we encourage homeowners who are interested to begin the process sooner rather than later.
