A dual fuel hybrid heat pump system combines the strengths of a gas furnace and electric heat pump.
A hybrid system contains both a heat pump and a gas furnace. During most of the year, when outdoor temperatures are relatively mild, the heat pump efficiently provides the home's heat.
At a certain point, when outdoor temperatures get very cold, the gas furnace becomes more efficient at heating than the heat pump. At this temperature, the thermostat senses the cold outdoor temperature and automatically switches on the gas furnace and switches off the heat pump, maximizing the efficiency of your heating system.

Benefits of a Dual-Fuel Hybrid Heat Pump System
- Dual fuel system ensures your home is heated as efficiently as possible, no matter how cold it is outside
- The system automatically switches to gas heating when it gets below a certain temperature outside
- When a 2-stage or variable speed heat pump is combined with a variable speed furnace, the system is able to run at lower speeds with quieter, more efficient operation, more even temperatures, and better air filtration
- During milder cold weather, the air heated by the heat pump is less dry than a gas furnace puts out, making the air more comfortable in your home
- During the coldest days of the year, the gas furnace handles the heating and puts out higher temperature air, improving your comfort
- A dual-fuel hybrid heat pump system is excellent for homes with existing gas furnaces, allowing the home to retain its gas appliances while having one of the world's most efficient heating systems
- Provides air conditioning in the Summer, just like a traditional heat pump
