Finding and repairing an indoor coil leak in Renton
About a week without proper heat is a long time to wait for an answer. At this Renton home, the immediate need was to get the heat pump heating again. Testing found very low refrigerant, so a recharge alone would not explain the problem. We needed to find where the refrigerant was escaping and what it would take to repair the system.
Finding the leak
Our technician began a leak search that day and located the problem in the indoor coil. A pressure test and an electronic leak detector confirmed the finding. The repair required a replacement coil.
While the replacement was being arranged, the heat pump could not provide heat. Two temporary loaner space heaters were offered to help the homeowner in the meantime. The next visit would address the leaking coil and restore the refrigerant system, with the goal of returning the home to its usual source of heat.
Replacing the coil and testing both modes
On the return visit, we replaced the indoor coil and confirmed the refrigerant system was sealed. The work included refrigerant recovery, vacuum, drier and recharge service. The technician added the appropriate refrigerant charge, then tested heating and cooling.
The completion notes record operation within the recommended ranges in both modes, with no further concerns found during those tests.
For the homeowner, the repair meant returning to the home’s usual source of heat after relying on a temporary solution. The leak had a confirmed location, the failed coil was replaced, and both operating modes were checked afterward. The photos show the coil and service gauges used during the work.
