What is a Dual-Fuel (Hybrid) Heat Pump?

February 06, 2024

As we've all seen over the last few years, weather patterns seem to be rapidly changing here in the Puget Sound region, with summers growing hotter and winters getting colder. With such rapid change, it's difficult to know which heating and cooling system is the best for your home. One technology that has been gaining popularity is the Duel-Fuel Heat Pump system. In this blog, we'll discuss the benefits and limitations of this type of system.

Understanding the Hybrid Heat Pump

A Hybrid Heat Pump combines the best of both worlds: the efficiency of an electric heat pump and the reliability of a traditional gas furnace. This hybrid system intelligently switches between the two heat sources based on the outdoor temperature, usually around freezing, maximizing energy efficiency based on external conditions.

How it Works

Electric Heat Pump Mode: In milder weather conditions, the Hybrid Heat Pump operates as an electric heat pump. It extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it indoors, providing efficient heating without relying on fossil fuels.

Gas Furnace Mode: When temperatures drop significantly, the system seamlessly transitions to the gas furnace mode. This ensures reliable heating even in extreme cold, as gas furnaces are known for their ability to produce high heat output.

Benefits of Hybrid Heat Pumps

Energy Efficiency: By automatically selecting the most energy-efficient mode based on external temperatures, the Hybrid Heat Pump System minimizes energy consumption and reduces utility bills.

Environmental Friendliness: The electric heat pump mode utilizes renewable energy sources, making it an eco-friendly choice. Additionally, the system's intelligent operation contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Especially for Seattle City & Customers where most electricity is hydro-electric.

Year-Round Comfort: Whether it's a mild autumn day or a frigid winter night, the Hybrid Heat Pump adapts to deliver consistent and comfortable indoor temperatures. It is also an easy way to add air-conditioning to an existing gas furnace system.

Cost Savings: The combination of energy efficiency and reduced reliance on gas during milder seasons translates to long-term cost savings for homeowners.

Possible Limitations:

Ductwork: Most homes are great candidates for a Dual-Fuel System however, some Puget Sound area homes have ductwork designed with heating, not cooling, in mind. It's important to have professionals come and inspect your home and advise on what type of system is best for your home.

Gas Service: Your home must be equipped with a gas service, otherwise a dual-fuel system is not possible to install in your home and an electric heat pump is likely a better system for you.
