How Much Does AC Cost in Seattle?

If you’ve lived in the Seattle area for any length of time, you’re probably aware that our weather pattern seems to be changing. According to Seattle Met Magazine, since 2015 we have had 2 different record-breaking heat waves during the summer. We’ve also had extremely poor air quality in August for two years in a row due to large forest fires filling our region with smoke and ash. This poor air quality discourages people from opening their windows. If this pattern continues it will make air conditioning more important than ever in Seattle.

Along with these weather changes, we’ve also been the country’s fastest growing city over the last decade, adding well over 100,000 people, or a growth of 18.7 percent according to the Seattle Times. In most areas of our country, air conditioning is a standard necessity, meaning the people that move here from out of state are likely expecting to have air conditioning. Also, housing prices in Seattle have skyrocketed, and as a result, newer homes are getting taller and skinnier, with bedrooms on the upper levels. Many attics are also being converted to finished bedrooms to add additional space. Rooms in the upper areas of homes are especially prone to getting extremely hot and uncomfortable during the summer, making air conditioning even more necessary.

These changes are causing a large shift in how we think about air conditioning. It’s quickly becoming a necessity in Seattle, rather than the luxury it was in decades past. As a Seattle heating and air conditioning provider, over the last few years our busiest installation season has switched from the winter to the summer months. A lot of homeowners are adding air conditioning!

So How Much Does AC Cost to Install?

The short answer is “it depends.” There are a lot of options available to homeowners that weren’t there just a few years ago. Even homes with no central ductwork have excellent options available to them. The cost of air conditioning depends on what kind of system you decide to go with, how large your home is, and how much of your home you want covered by the system. It’s possible to cover as little as a single room, all the way up to the entire home. Every installation is somewhat unique, which factors into the price you pay for AC.

With all of that being said, the average cost to add air conditioning to a home, including installation, electrical and permits is typically between $8,000 and $13,000, depending on the system, the home, and the installation. While that can seem pricey, there are financing options available that can make adding air conditioning much more affordable. Payments can be as low as $55 per month, depending on the system cost and loan term. These financing options are all without prepayment penalties and are available on credit approval.
