On May 1st, 2013, all newly installed gas furnaces must be 90% efficient or above in all Northern states, including Washington State. This new requirement has wide-reaching implications for existing homes in Washington, especially homes that currently have non-condensing 80% gas furnaces installed.
All 90%+ furnaces are condensing furnaces. These furnaces have different exhaust venting requirements than non-condensing furnaces, as well as the need to dispose of the condensate. Because of this, replacing an 80% furnace with a 90%+ furnace can be costly. It may make sense to replace your furnace now while you have more equipment and cost choices available to you.
